Patients who want to smooth out the appearance of a dimpled chin in Swansea can benefit from dimpled chin Botox, also known as chin-tox. At House of Beauty Med Spa, we use this popular anti-wrinkle injectable to restore a balanced and youthful look to the chin.
What Is a Dimpled Chin?
When people have a dimpled chin, the front of their chin is covered in tiny shallow indentations and has a rough texture. Because of this pitted appearance, people have come up with a number of names for a dimpled chin: “pebble chin,” “golf ball chin,” “peach pit chin,” and “peau d’orange chin/orange peel chin.”
Around 20% to 30% of people have a dimpled chin. This issue is purely cosmetic and isn’t indicative of any underlying medical problem. However, it can make people look older than their actual age and can make them feel very self-conscious. It’s also quite difficult to mask with makeup.
Why Does Chin Dimpling Occur?
The chin’s appearance is affected by the tension, size, and position of the mentalis muscles. These paired muscles are located on each side of the chin, with a small space between them. They begin at the crease beneath the bottom lip and come down to the bottom of the front of the chin.
The mentalis muscles control the actions of the bottom lip. The depressor anguli oris (DLO) and depressor labii inferioris (DLI) muscles in the chin also affect lip movement. When the mentalis muscles are overactive and are repeatedly overcontracted, the overlying skin is constantly being stretched, creating the appearance of a dimpled chin.
Repeatedly contracting the mentalis muscles over the years is an unconscious habit and can occur whenever someone is concentrating on a task. It can also happen when patients with a weak chin unconsciously leave their lips open. Additionally, people with an overbite can unconsciously create this overcontraction.
After enough years of repeated overcontraction, the muscles get used to their contracted position and are less likely to return to a flat, at-rest position. To correct the problem, precise Botox injections are required.
How Does Botox Treat a Dimpled Chin?
Botox relaxes overcontracted mentalis muscles, helping the chin’s surface become smooth again. It does this by blocking the release of nerve signals to the mentalis muscles. Without repeated overcontractions, the muscles are able to relax and to naturally stay in their relaxed position.
During a treatment session, Botox is injected through the skin into the mentalis muscles using a fine needle. The number of units of Botox required varies; women often need two units in each mentalis muscle, whereas men often need three to five units in each mentalis muscle.
